Varsity Thrashes Newport

Posted On: April 4, 2016 Posted By: Sandi Kitchen

For the first time in Campbell County softball history, a Lady Camel softball player has hit a grand slam. Despite 39 degree temperatures, freshman McKinlee Miller went yard and launched a 201 foot GRAND SALAMI over the center field fence at Newport Veterans’ Park as the 17 frigid fans in attendance went berserk. Miller drove in five runs on the day and scored two in leading the now 6-2 Camels to a 22-0 thrashing of Newport.

Danielle Orick also set a Campbell County record, sacrificing her foot, her leg, her tush, and her lower back as she was plunked FOUR consecutive times. Despite rampant rumors that the “hits” had been ordered by Homeland Security officers for traveling to Campbell County on Saturday for what turned out to be a false alarm, Newport hurlers denied the allegations, and Orick emerged with a smile on her face…but she vowed to make tomorrow’s opponent pay for the plunkings.

The Lady Camels racked up 10 total hits, with Sarah Terhaar, Taylor Peterson, and Brittany Fornash each collecting two knocks apiece. Fornash and Becca Mitchell each drove in three teammates, and once again, the pitching was superb, as Ashley Leicht and Jessica Walsh teamed up for the no-hit shutout.

Jessica Walsh, Ashley Leicht, and Sydney Fillhardt also collected hits in the win.

JV Camels win 14-0…that’s six in a row!

Taylor Watson was OUTSTANDING on the mound, shutting out and no-hitting the Lady Wildcats.

I have to apologize for the dearth of offensive highlights, but my hands were simply not responding well to the cold and, quite honestly, neither was my brain.

I do remember that Selena Miller dropped down her very first Blow Pop Bunt single of the season (she had two hits on the day), and there were multiple offensive stars. Jalyn Jackson hit a rocket up the middle for a hit, Haley Hartig stung a ball to left for a knock, Ellie Busam roped a single to center, Madison Meyers had a hit, and Lacie Chinn hit a scorcher by the 3rd baseman for a single.

There were several others who hit balls hard and reached base, and more than one Lady Camel scored multiple runs, but let’s face it…our opponents made a plethora of errors in the field, and their pitchers walked an entire caravan of Camels while hitting several others.

Overall, it was a good team win in adverse weather conditions.
