We had great weather at the Kentucky Horse Park on Saturday. The course was a bit muddy in places, but overall we were lucky with the conditions.
Noah Slone started our day with the AAA Boys State Championship. His early mile split was right on target, but a huge pack of competitive runners surrounded him at every turn. His final time of 17:47 and 94th place was a strong finish for a sophomore season!
In the girls race, we had a few goals in mind. Almost all the runners finished within thirty seconds of their season bests, and considering we have been mending nagging injuries for two weeks, the ladies ran well. Kylie Little finished her debut state meet in 47th place and time of 21:16. Seniors Allie Franzen (55th, 21:21) and Beam Kumkerd (83, 21:43) wrapped up their high school XC careers just twenty-two seconds apart, and Noel Slone (94, 21:48) finished just five seconds behind Beam. The fact that within those five seconds eleven other athletes finished shows how tight of a race the state meet can be. Devan Carrigan capped her cross country career with a 23:18, and 189th place. Our 1-5 split was a respectable 2:01. Emma Hogle (211, 23:33) ran extremely well in her first state performance, and Savannah Krift (250, 24:35) wrapped up the Lady Camels pack for the day. As a team we finished 14th of 37 scoring teams, placing us much higher than we have been in a long time. While this wasn’t quite a goal, we couldn’t be more proud of these ladies who showed true mental and physical toughness late in the season!
