Senior Night at Campbell County had it all; a wind storm, power outage, change of venue, pre-game ceremony, and a win over the visiting Ryle Raiders.  The Camels placed 5 players in double figures as the Seniors played their last home game (sort of) in front of a good crowd at the Campbell County Middle School.  The game had to be moved to the middle school after wind knocked out power at the high school sending parents, players, cheerleaders, and all those preparing for Senior Night scrambling to get everything prepared.

Seniors Matt Wilson, Trent McGovney, Cam Lemons, and Gideon Measner graced the starting lineup along with junior Cole Hegyi.  Earlier in the day, Wilson had been named Player of the Year in the 10th Region and will be the region’s representative for Kentucky’s Mr. Basketball award.  Things started well for the Camels as Matt Wilson scored 7 of his teams 12 first quarter points and Gideon Measner (need to work on that player intro) drained a 3 from the corner.  A Trent McGovney bucket capped off the first quarter scoring as the Camels and Raiders were tied at 12 after one.

The Camels extended the lead in the 2nd as McGovney found his mark from behind the arc with a pair of threes.  Tanner Clos added a three ball and 4 other Camels scored in the quarter to give the Camels a 36-24 halftime lead.

Tanner Clos came out of the locker room on fire scoring the first 7 points of the half to extend the Camels lead to 19.  After a Ryle timeout, the Raiders settled down and cut the Camels lead down to as close as 8 late in the 3rd.  A late 3 by Garren Bertsch put the Camels lead back in double figures at 48-37 after the 3rd quarter.

The orange and black Raiders hung around and continued to stay within 8-10 points of the Camels throughout the 4th quarter, but Cole Hegyi scored 8 of his game’s 12 points to keep the Camels comfortably in front.  Garren Bertsch also racked up 8 in the quarter with 5 of those coming from the charity stripe, and Cam Lemons hit a deep three at the buzzer for the final basket of the regular season and 70-59 final score.

“Player of the Year”, Wilson, led the Camels with 17 points, and fellow seniors Trent McGovney, Gideon Measner, and Cam Lemons added 10, 5, and 3 respectively.  Garren Bertsch scored 13, Cole Hegyi 12, and Tanner Clos 10 to close out the scoring.  The Camels will take on the winner of the Silver Grove/Calvary Christian game on Wednesday night at the Middle School in the semifinals of the 37th District Tournament.

Special thanks to the administration, coaches, players, cheerleaders, and especially Mrs. Hegyi and Mrs. Bertsch for all of their efforts in making this a truly special night for 4 young men (and many others) who have dedicated much time and work to represent Campbell County High School.  Thanks for the wins, district championships, regional championships, trips to Rupp Arena, and all of the memories.
