Friday night the Camels traveled to Stan Arnzen Gymnasium to play the Newport Wildcats, looking to add to their 5 game winning streak. 2 hours later the Camels were winners of 6 straight as they defeated the Wildcats 61-57.
The Camels jumped out to a 13-11 first quarter lead on 4 points each from Trent McGovney and Matt Wilson, a three from Garren Bertsch and a Cole Hegyi bucket. The Camels extended the lead in the 2nd quarter to as many as 10, but missed free throw opportunities allowed the Wildcats back into the game as they cut the Camels lead to only 3 at the half at 28-25. Joel Day came off the bench and provided some needed offense for the Camels knocking down two triples and adding a layup for all 8 of his points in the quarter.
In the 3rd quarter, Matt Wilson found opportunities to score inside on some nice ball movement and assists from his Camel teammates. Wilson and Hegyi provided much of the offense for the Camels in the 3rd, but the Wildcats kept the game close with timely 3 point shooting. On defense, Tanner Clos and Colin Teegarden spent the evening challenging Newport star Ethan Snapp. The Camel duo did a nice job of containing Snapp and making things difficult for the Newport guard.
The Camels started to wear down the Wildcats in the 4th. Wilson continued to be too much for Newport to handle inside while the Camel guards controlled the tempo of the game with good ball movement and patience. Hegyi added another 5 points in the final stanza and late free throws by Trent McGovney extended the Camel lead to 7. A Newport 3 at the buzzer made the final score 61-57 Camels.
Matt Wilson led the Camels with 24 points and double digit rebounds. Cole Hegyi added 13 points. Bertsch chipped in 9, Day 8, and McGovney 7. The Camels host the Simon Kenton Pioneers on Tuesday night 2/9 followed by another home contest with the Pendleton County Wildcats on Wednesday the 10th.
