Big 2nd Half Propels Camels

The Camels used a 50 point 2nd half to break open a close game against the Augusta Panthers on Thursday night and roll to an 87-67 victory.  Early on in the contest the smaller Panthers were finding ways to get to the basket and hitting threes to match the Camels.  Tanner Clos got off to a good start scoring 8 of his 13 points in the 1st quarter.  Cole Hegyi also hit a three and several buckets as the Panthers surrounded big man Matt Wilson with 2-3 players.  The Camels led 19-15 after one.

Trent McGovney nailed a pair of treys in the 2nd, and Clos added another, but the scrappy Panthers continued to manufacture points and find a way to hang around with the larger Camels.  Matt Wilson was able to get to the free throw line several times in the quarter and added 7 before the half.  At half the Camels led 37-33.

The 2nd half was a different story as the Camels picked up the tempo and also the defense.  Garren Bertsch came alive in the 3rd after a scoreless 1st half and hit 3 bombs from the corner.  McGovney also added his third long ball of the night, and Wilson was able to make some room in the paint to do what he does best.  The Panthers also found themselves in some foul trouble as the “man in the middle” was just too strong to contain.  At the end of three quarters the Camels had increased their lead to 61-45.

The Camels maintained their comfortable margin throughout the 4th quarter as the overmatched Panthers ran out of gas.  Cam Lemons added the finishing touches to the 20 point win scoring the final 4 of the game.  Matt Wilson recorded his umpteenth double/double this year with 27 points and 11 boards.  4 other Camels scored in double figures with Cole Hegyi at 17 and 13 each from McGoveny, Bertsch, and Clos.

The Camels have a big district matchup this Saturday night against the Scott Eagles which will impact seeding for the 37th District tournament. Game time will be 5:30pm at the CAMPBELL COUNTY MIDDLE SCHOOL.  Please come out and support the Camels.  You will still have time to catch the UK Wildcats at 7:00pm.
