Camels Outlast Birds

The Camels ended their 2 game losing streak defeating the Highlands Bluebirds on Tuesday night 56-52.  The Camels traveled to the newly renovated “Birds Nest” in Ft. Thomas featuring new hardwood and video screen looking for some momentum heading into the 2nd half of the season.

The boys in purple got off to a good start as Matt Wilson and Cole Hegyi assumed the majority of the scoring duties in the first quarter.  Hegyi hit 2 early three pointers and Wilson did what he does best in the paint.  Wilson scored 9 in the quarter and Hegyi added 8 to put the Camels up 19-13 after one period.

The Camels went cold in the second quarter only scoring 8 points while the Birds were able to capitalize on Camel turnovers and cut the deficit to two at 27-25 going into the half.  The low scoring affair continued into the 2nd half as the Camels could only add 9 to their halftime total while Highlands netted 11 in the third quarter to tie the game at 36.

The Camels got a spark at the end of the 3rd quarter as Joel Day came into the lineup and drained a three pointer from the corner as the 3rd quarter ended.  That basket seemed to ignite the Camels.  Day added two free throws and picked the pocket of a Bluebird ball handler for another basket to extend the Camels lead out to four.  Matt Wilson punched the clock for the final period as the Camels were committed to pounding the ball inside to the big man.  Wilson continued to create space for himself inside despite being surrounded by 2 or 3 defenders the entire night.  Wilson scored 10 of his game high 22 in the final period, while Day added 6 more.  However, it took a Trent McGovney free throw with 9 seconds to play to seal the 56-52 victory for the Camels.

Wilson finished with 22.  Cole Hegyi also reached double figures with 10.  Joel Day scored 9 and Trent McGovney added 7.  The Camels are back home on Friday night to host the Conner Cougars.
