Camels Fall To Breds in John Turner Classic

After a physically and emotionally draining loss to crosstown rival Brossart Mustangs on Friday night, the Camels had no time to dwell on the past as they traveled to Newport High School Saturday night to play the Newport Catholic Thorobreds in the John Turner Classic.  The Camels were the next to last game of the evening in a full day of basketball in Newport.  Not only was this a battle of 9th Region vs. 10th Region powers, but the game also featured a matchup between 9th Region player of the year candidate Ben Weyer and 10th Region player of the year candidate Matt Wilson.

Both teams looked flat early as neither team scored in the opening minutes.  The Camels, looking to regain their legs from the previous night, finally hit the scoreboard on a couple of free throws from Garren Bertsch.  NewCath returned the favor as Ben Weyer got untracked under the basket and from behind the arc.  Matt Wilson held his own with a couple of buckets inside, and Bertsch hit 2 three pointers as the Camels trailed 19-12 after one period.

In the 2nd, the Breds pressure defense got to the Camels causing multiple turnovers and leading to easy baskets.  Weyer got some help from his teammates  as they extended their lead to double digits.  Trent McGovney scored 5 of his 7 points in the 2nd period in an attempt to keep the Camels close, but the Breds outscored the Camels 24-11 in the period to lead  by 20 at the half.

The Camels came out slugging out of the intermission and outscored the Breds 10-2 to open the 2nd half and cut the Breds lead to 12.  However a timeout by the Breds slowed the Camels momentum, and Mr. Weyer went back to work.  The Breds continued to hit open 3’s, and the Camels continued to battle.  Matt Wilson held his own with a 10 point 4th quarter, and Bertsch scored 10 as well including 2 more treys.  The Camels and Breds played even in the 2nd half as a Camel 3 at the buzzer by Nate Schaeffer resulted in the final margin of victory.  The Breds, who led by 20 at the half, walked away with a 20 point win 81-61.

Garren Bertsch led the way for the Camels with 18 points, including 4 three pointers, and Matt Wilson recorded another double/double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.  Cole Hegyi scored 9, Tanner Close added 8, and Trent McGovney chipped in 7.

The Camels will travel to Ft. Thomas on Tuesday night to play Highlands in their newly renovated gymnasium.  The JV will play at 6 with the varsity scheduled for 7:30 …… weather permitting.
