Track State Championships Recap

Great to see a lot of success from middle school camels at the middle school state championships this weekend. Below is the recap from the head coach Cody Strouse.

What an amazing day for the CCMS track team yesterday at the State Championships. I love this group of kids and I am one proud coach. Our girls placed 5th at State! Each of our 4 relays set PR’s and School Records! That’s right. 4 relays and 4 School Records in one day. To top it off, we also set a Kentucky State Record in the 4×800. Kayla Kavanaugh, Tia Mounts, Grace Meiser, and Gracie Florimonte have officially ran the fastest 4×800 ever ran in the State of Kentucky at the MS level. For these four girls it was their second 4×800 championship in back to back years. Last year they came into State with a PR of 10:48 and they ran a 10:28 at State. This year they came into State with a PR of 10:41 and they ran a 10:21 at State. Needless to say, I think we’ve mastered the art of PR’ing at State!

Other school records ran include the 4×100 and 4×200, which are both made up of Cassie Wyatt, Tia Mounts, Brooke Pruetz, and Devan Carrigan. These girls placed 8th in the 4×200 and 11th in the 4×100 to set new School Records of 55.48 in the 4×100 and 1:56.43 in the 4×200. Hand-offs were perfect!

Gracie Florimonte set 3 School Records today and now holds 5 overall. Gracie placed 4th in the 1600m run and 4th in the 800m run. The 800m was a new school record time of 2:27.92. Right on her in 5th place was Kayla Kavanaugh who also broke the old school record time with her time of 2:27.98. This helps to explain our insane 4×800 time!

Tamara Wells stole some points with an 8th place finish in Javelin falling just short of her own School Record of 71-4.
Our girls ended the night with a 4×400 run for the ages. Kayla Kavanaugh, Tia Mounts, Gracie Florimonte, and Devan Carrigan placed second overall and ran a new School Record time of 4:26.65, beating a time that was previously set by a 4×400 I coached that won State. Tia Mounts ran in all 4 relays yesterday and broke school records in all 4 relays. Not a bad day.

For the boys, the day started great with a 5th place finish in the 4×800 by Evan Westlund, Justin Carroll, Nick Cartwright, and Cody Schwartz. These boys fell just seconds short of their own School Record. The boys 4×400 of Evan Westlund, Donovan Strange, Austin Hammack, and Cody Schwartz placed 8th overall with a big PR, falling 1 second short of the School Record. Our boys set a PR in the 4×100, 4×200, and 4×400. Cody Schwartz set big PR’s in the 400 and 800, running a 58.65 in the 400 and a 2:20.17 in the 800. The boys also had the most State Qualifiers for State in Pole Vault with 5, all of whom were first year vaulters! This is what I love about coaching at the MS level. We are their first exposure to the sport and get to teach all of the fundamentals. Pretty neat to see them start from scratch and become something great!
